FMLA

November 23, 2008

Family and Medical Leave Act

It did nothing but place a burden on companies and allowed employees to find newer and better ways to get out of work.

It’s a nice concept though, isn’t it? A government mandate that says employers HAVE to provide a certain amount of time off for their employees in case of of a health or family emergency or the birth or adoption of a child.

Except…like a lot of government mandates, it doesn’t really work all that well. It costs the company money when an employee has to take time off. Either in loss of productivity or because they had to temporarily hire someone else to do the job that you’re not doing because you aren’t there.

No don’t get me wrong, I think it is GOOD for a company to have a benefit in place for its employees so they can feel secure if something does happen and they need some time off…but shouldn’t that be at the sole discretion of the employer? Why does the government have to step in?

OH that’s right…because the government doesn’t think that you or me or any other entity in this country is capable of doing the right thing. The FMLA is a mandate on decency…but the last time I checked you couldn’t FORCE decency on someone.

And for some (Barack Hussein Obama) the FMLA isn’t enough! A law already burdening American companies (no wonder we’re trying to ship jobs oversees) should be expanded?

That’s right. Here’s what he has in mind:
– Leave for workers who provide elder care
-24 hours of leave each year so parents can participate in a child’s school functions
-Leave for workers who provide care for individuals who reside in their home for 6 months or more
-Leave so employees can address domestic violence and sexual assault

Anyone who doesn’t have kids, or someone to take care of, or who doesn’t get sick should be really pretty ticked about this. Because it’s not just the people who use these benefits that pay for them…it’s EVERYONE.

You think an employer who has to adjust pay or other benefits to pay for these mandates only passes it on to those most likely to use them? Nope….YOU are penalized for it too.

Socialism anyone? Have a couple helpings…seems like there’s plenty to go around these days.
