Over a billion liberals served…

December 27, 2008

I think that’s what the new Unitarian Church slogan should be.

I don’t know if it’s really a billion…probably not…but it sounds catchy. Just like the signs at McDonald’s that say “99 Billion Served” even though I know it’s more than that now…but they only put 2 slots on the signs, so they can’t go any higher!

Anyway, I was curious after reading an article about Barry having a memorial service for his typical white granny at a Unitarian church in Hawaii – so I started to read up on the religion.

Their website says “Representing over 1,000 liberal religious congregations.” But what does that really mean?

Here is how they describe themselves:

Unitarian Universalism is a caring, open-minded religion that encourages you to seek your own spiritual path. Our Faith draws on many religious traditions, welcoming people with different beliefs. We are united by shared values, not by creed or dogma. Our congregations are places where people gather to nurture their spirits and put their faith into action by helping to make our communities—and the world—a better place.

That’s a religion? You bring a bunch of people who can’t make up their minds about their faith so you just slap them all together and call it fabulous? Ok…to each his own I guess…but it seems like a bit of a cop out to me…and a little too much like 1960’s hippie crud. And we all know how well THAT worked out for people.

Basically as long as your beliefs are open and liberal, you’re welcome. If you hold on to any sort of strong beliefs in the doctrine of your religion, then you’re probably not going to feel at home there. They appear to have hand-picked the pleasant parts of every imaginable religion to bring it into one.

Everything is happy…everyone is equal…everyone is good…

I’m sure during their services rays of light shine through the windows…causing everyone to be surround in a halo of sunshine and love.

I suppose I shouldn’t judge too much, considering I don’t think I’ve ever even met a Unitarian before…but it’s just too ridiculous.

They even go around helping the idiots trying to cross the border into the US illegally…because apparently just TOO many people die trying. Well tough shit…maybe they should try NOT breaking the law…then maybe they wouldn’t die trying to get here!

Now don’t get me wrong…everyone is welcome to believe what they want. And as much as I might find it funny, I respect people who have beliefs and hold on to them. The problem is…there seems to be a sect in every religion that just isn’t satisfied with keeping their beliefs to themselves. They have to force it on everyone – and they use their religion for purposes that any sane person can see isn’t right.

Do Unitarians fall into this category? Well I’d say at least some of them do.
