Who’s actually a member of the Religious Right?

January 2, 2009

I’m so tired of that term.

It is used so loosely now that even if you go to church and you say you’re a Republican, then you’re part of the religious right.

I don’t think the problem of the religious right is really a problem at all. They represent a small portion of Republicans as a whole – yet it seems they are all anyone wants to talk about.

People assume we’re all like that – that we want to force Christianity on everyone. That’s simply not the case.

The media has brainwashed people into believing that Republicans are just a funny group of Bible-thumpers – ready to hit you with their religion, whether you like it or not.

You can’t even try to defend the rights of Christians without being labeled part of the religious right. It’s fine to defend Muslims, or atheists, or any OTHER religion, just not Christianity.

Republicans generally stand up for ALL of our individual rights – it just so happens that the individuals rights of a lot of Christians are being trampled on because somewhere out there, some undoubtedly wise person decided that there were just far too many of us out there expressing our religious beliefs – and it just wasn’t quite fair to the minority.

And sadly, there are a lot of Republicans out there who want to put a stop of all of it…to stop standing up for what’s right, because they don’t want to be associated with that pesky religious right anymore.

And it’s sad, because they don’t realize that 1.) that’s NOT being part of the religious right and 2.) if they give that up, they might as well stop fighting for everyone’s rights – because that’s what the entire issue is about

I know I just rambled on, but I’m pissed. Republicans don’t have an effing clue what they stand for anymore.
