Obama and Journalism and Integrity (Oh my)

September 21, 2009

In an interview with the Toledo Blade, (h/t Pat Dollard) Obama had this to say:

“Journalistic integrity, you know, fact-based reporting, serious investigative reporting, how to retain those ethics in all these different new media and how to make sure that it’s paid for, is really a challenge.”

“I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding.”

I’d say that before the president concerns himself with lack of journalistic integrity within the ‘blogosphere‘ he should first focus on the lack of it within ‘reputable’ news outlets.

He should also be aware that there are a great number of blogs out there that aren’t simply spewing opinions, although the ones that are primarily opinion-oriented certainly serve a purpose when done right.

If Obama wants to worry about something, he should concern himself with why the mainstream media appears to be losing (or in some cases, already has lost) the ability to report with integrity. Then maybe he would understand why people are flocking to other outlets for information.

Or, maybe he does get it, and this is just more empty rhetoric. Nah…it couldn’t be that.
